Datatelling is an exploratory data analysis and visualization studio founded by Jen Lowe that provides quantitative research and visualization support for scientists and other creative workers. We use data to create visualizations that move people, that make them a little more excited about, and engaged with, some part of the world.

Numbers, graphs, and maps alone rarely move people.

Stories move people; they enliven us to action.

We believe that the future will require us all to think creatively about solutions to hard problems, and that data accessibility will be central to problem-solving. Our goal is to combine story with data through visualization in order to motivation action and provide information to support decision making.

Jen Lowe has a Master’s degree in Information Science, focusing on government data and secrecy, information seeking behavior, and online searching. She completed graduate work in pure mathematics and a B.S. in applied mathematics, and provides data analysis and scientific programming for the Research Foundation at California State University. Jen is passionate about open data and open source tools, especially R, Python, and Processing. A sucker for a good argument, she’ll nearly always side with complexity.
